A constant double point of view on theatre aimed on one side to give art a place to grow freely and on the other give the audience the intellectual and emotional involvement that the artistic production can provide.
Being part of artists' dreams and projects, especially for newly conceived works, building a communicating vessels, open to suggestions and incentives from our territory of activity.
Projecting instead of programming, since this is the only way to share the artistic process of creation and offer it to the audience.
Developing the role of Public Civic Theatre of Emilia Romagna Region, strongly dedicated and related to its Theatres, artists and public, as well as nation-wide and international activities in drama productions, theatrical culture and training.
HISTORY

Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione, permanent Public Theatre of Emilia-Romagna Region, is active from 1977. In April 2001 it has been transformed in a Foundation. Since 1994 Ert is directed by Pietro Valenti.
ERT is first of all a theatrical production centre. With more than 110 shows produced, ERT works in two basic directions: collaborations with directors, and search for shows and spaces that might be alternative to the traditional Italian theatre halls, meeting a new, complex and varied public. ERT considers its public on the one hand as an active subject to which it provides an essential service bringing in town the best new productions in the national scene, but on the other as a mobile subject to which it delivers different stimulus in order to elude habits.
Among the many directors that have collaborated with ERT in recent years we can remember Giancarlo Cobelli, Pippo Delbono, Cesare Lievi, Thierry Salmon, Federico Tiezzi, Enrique Vargas, Bob Wilson, Eimuntas Nekrosius, Massimo Castri, Alvis Hermanis. Recent theatrical seasons in Modena have included different kinds of productions, from ancient to contemporary theatre, without ever abandoning the search for quality given by the importance of performers and directors and by the choice of titles that range over many theatrical heritages from different cultures. In recent years Ert productions were invited at Festival of Amsterdam, Avignon, Barcelona, Berlin, Bruxelles, Caracas, Leuven, Madrid, Montreal, Moscow, Porto Alegre, San Paulo, Zurich.
Centres of ERT productions are: Teatro Storchi (since 1991) and Teatro delle Passioni (since 1999) in Modena and Teatro Bonci (since 2001) in Cesena. Besides those theatres, ERT run also 8 other theatres in Emilia-Romagna: Teatro Gonzaga in Bagnolo in Piano, Teatro Testoni in Casalecchio di Reno, Teatro Dadà in Castelfranco Emilia, Teatro della Regina in Cattolica, Teatro Asioli in Correggio, Teatro Nuovo in Mirandola, Teatro Mac Mazzieri in Pavullo, Teatro Ermanno Fabbri in Vignola. On 2000, Emilia-Romagna Region entrusted ERT with the reopening of Teatro Mijeni in Scutari (Albany) from a structural and organizational point of view.
An important moment of interchange with the international scene was give by "Le vie dei festival" (Routes of festivals), the autumn theatrical meeting that takes in the most interesting productions of Italian and foreign summer festivals. National debuts are very often given here, mixing languages and theatre genders, showing foreign great theatrical experiences without forgetting the important Italian experimental theatre scene. Among the numerous guests in past editions, we would like to remember at least Carmelo Bene, Peter Brook, Joseph Chaikin, Lev Dodin, Jan Fabre, Rodrigo Garcia, Philip Glass, Maguy Marin, Mathilde Monnier, Alain Platel, Meg Stuart, Bob Wilson. From 2005 the festival change his name in VIE Scena Contemporanea Festival, and it's take place place every year in Modena, Carpi and Vignola. The Festival develops mixing languages and genders, showing foreign great theatrical experiences without forgetting the important Italian experimental theatre scene. Among the numerous guests in past editions, we would like to remember at least Bob Wilson, Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, Alvis Hermanis, Josef Nadj, Virgilio Sieni, Tim Etchells/Forced Entertainment, Rimini Protokoll, Motus, Belarus Free Theatre, Thomas Ostermeier, Krzysztof Warlikowski. VIE's next edition will take place from May 24 to June 1, 2012.
In July 2008, the Culture Commission of the European Union opted to support PROSPERO, an ambitious theatre project with a five-year European cultural cooperation agreement (2008-2012) drawn up by six establishments: Theatre National de Bretagne (Rennes, France) which is the coordinator of the project, Theatre de la Place (Liege, Belgium), Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione (Modena, Italy), Schaubuhne (Berlin, Germany), Centro Cultural de Belem (Lisbon, Portugal), Tutkivan Teatterityon Keskus (Tampere, Finland). Since then, these establishments have been working to develop European creation, establish European research projects and train young actors. They are making the most of a shared cultural space and heritage, helping works and artists become more widely seen, reinforcing intercultural dialogue and promoting the diversity of cultures. Beyond these objectives, they wish to contribute to the emergence of citizenship in a Europe that they wish to be free, democratic, social, pacifist, artistic, cultural and open to other continents. For this season PROSPERO will be continuing its activities along three main strands: the development of European creation, the organisation of European research, the training of young actors.
ERT is also active in the educational field and the overseas promotion of artistic theatre projects of international level. Emilia-Romagna Region has recognized ERT as accredited educational board since year 2000. Anyway, relations with Public Schools have always been very frequent, thanks to refresher courses for teachers, meetings, conferences and show-lectures that more and more involve the students. With international partners and with the sponsoring of the General Division V of European Commission, ERT has completed and is doing researches over the culture and economy of live shows.
